From where the sea can be seen

The Erika Deák Gallery is delighted to present its upcoming exhibition, new paintings by Zsófi Barabás.

The title of the exhibition, From Where the Sea Can Be Seen, not only refers to Krisztina Tóth’s latest book, but also indicates the artist’s current position: Barabás’s painting has evolved into a mature, distinctive and instantly recognizable universe.

In Barabás’s new works, a liberating sense of freedom and playfulness is intertwined with her previous knowledge. These paintings are shaped by the combination of visceral desires and conscious image-making. Her paintings evoke associations in the viewer akin to those experienced only underwater or when observing microscopic images. Their archaic forms are just as reminiscent of DNA patterns as of landscape details captured from above.

As in the title painting, various shades of blue, splashes of colour and forms that intertwine and diverge from each other float freely in space, with only the canvas’s edge limiting their flow. Just a step away from this realm lie her series of minimalist and shaped paintings, in which Barabás focuses on a single narrative, on one motif alone. Painted with sensuous richness and energetic brushstrokes, her shaped works seem to extract a single element from the field of her two-dimensional paintings. These organic forms primarily signify the pure simplicity of nature, the essence of sentences stripped from all embellishment. Zsófi Barabás’s recent works prove her place among the most important painters in Hungarian art history.
