The Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg

Vitaly Pushnitsky often works across different media: besides his paintings, he also creates installations, sculptures and drawings. The central questions of his art are the relationship between time and space, as well as the origins and present state of art. His work is basically a continuous time travel between present and past, which may be traced most precisely probably through the imagery of his paintings. His black and white tondo-shaped canvases invoke classical and contemporary moments and moods at the same time. The spiritual allusions of the circle are one of the central themes of his art, but his paintings are usually transcendental, sacral, with strong ties to the Russian iconic traditions. At other times his works seem to be a mixture of social-realism and contemporary post-socialist historical painting. His small collages are compositions loaded with references to western art history, for example his series created from the abstracted space structures of Renaissance and medieval painting reproductions.
