About the Artist
Szabolcs Barakonyi lives and works in Budapest. Since 2001 he has been a member of the Young Photo Artists’ Studio in Hungary. Between 2003 and 2006 he was the recipient of a Pécsi József scholarship. In 2006 he won the Lucien Hervé and Rodolf Hervé Grant, and in 2007 at the Rencontres d'Arles festival he was presented with the Photo Folio Gallery & Review Laureate, and in 2011 he was awarded the National Cultural Fund of Hungary's André Kertész Grant. He's been a DLA student at the Doctoral School of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts since 2018. Barakonyi’s photographs are characterized by realism, often documentary in nature, while his topics cover grotesque and absurd situations. One of his best-known series is titled “Tell your Mommy, Bring some Money!” was created in 2005. His first appearance in the Deák Erika Gallery was his solo exhibition titled “To Do” in 2013, followed by a group exhibition with Péter Hecker in 2015, titled “Fine, Thanks!”.
