Sorry I Gave Birth I Disappeared But Now I'm Back

The Erika Deák Gallery is pleased to present its season opening event, a pop-up exhibition of Andi Gáldi Vinkó's ‘Sorry I Gave Birth I Disappeared But Now I 'm Back’ photo series. The opening of the exhibition will also be the launch of the book of the same title, published by Trolley Books, London. The event will take place on Thursday 8 September 2022 at 7pm. The gallery will continue the presentation of the artist's book and works at the UNSEEN fair in Amsterdam in September, where Gáldi Vinkó's work will be presented at a solo stand.

Andi Gáldi Vinkó is an internationally acclaimed photographer, her works are visual expressions of honest, intimate emotions. Her creative process is always guided by personal narratives, and her work shows the inseparability of art and life. Her ‘Paradisco’ series, which was produced between 2009 and 2014 and has been published in the international press, is also an imprint of her own life, capturing the duality of existential anxiety and joy experienced by her contemporaries. In ‘Borders’, produced in the summer of 2015, she captured the moments and circumstances of the border crossings of precarious refugee families, again showing the deep human emotions beneath the surface. Her latest series explores the theme of motherhood, documenting her own and her immediate surroundings, while at the same time reflecting sensitively on the most pressing social issues. Her series ‘Sorry I Gave Birth I Disappeared But Now I 'm Back’ aims to show the highs and lows of motherhood and the emotional changes these bring, in all their stripped-down, truthfulness.

Charlotte Jansen writes on Gáldi Vinkó’s series: „So where do we go when we disappear into this fog
of mothering? To frame it as a disappearance as Andi Gáldi Vinkó does with her characteristic wry wit, is ironic – when in fact, we become an entire universe, we show up in the most significant, fundamental and unwavering way for another human being, turning our bodies into sustenance, shelter and solace. What I feel, looking at Andi’s accumulation of six years of four intertwined lives, documented in undulations
of abstraction to globular, puffy, leaking realism, with elastic beauty and without saccharine sentimentality, is presence, not absence.”

Andi Gáldi Vinkó's works have appeared in The New Yorker, Vogue, M Le Monde, iD, Die Zeit, and Dazed, among others, and are included in numerous national and international collections. Her recent exhibitions include My Obvious Presence at Erika Deák Gallery, Budapest, Birth at TJ Boulting, Variations of Reality at Circulation, Fetart MAC, Paris, Golden Boundaries at Robert Capa Centre.
